Penny Arcade has been gradually getting back into action since its resurgence in 2017, and its first new music in 35 years is released on 18 April on 7".
Penny Arcade
Legendary guitar-pop band formed in 1986 around guitarist Masato Ishida and vocalist Yoko Satori, who would later form Venus Peter, and active until 1989 as the core of the guitar-pop scene that began quietly in Tokyo in the mid-1980s. The band played with Lollipop Sonic, who later became Flipper's Guitar, Roof's predecessors The Bachelors and Osaka's Debonair, and became the forerunners of the guitar pop and indie scene that blossomed in the 1990s.
The reissue of A GIRL FROM PENNY ARCADE, a sound source from those days, led to a reunion live performance in 2017, and in 2023 they will perform together in the revival live performance of Velloud by Shuntaro Okino and Keigo Oyamada (ex Flippers Guitar CORNELIUS), and release new music in 2024, their first in 35 years. The current members are Masato Ishida, Yoko Satori, Soto and Eco.

Away out out away, Free like a sail
Drift back to the shore, Thresholds of roar
Still there things piled up in my mind
Sandman wiped them all away
Then I saw you kneeled down on the sand
You never looked so small
Facing highest tides
Then I see that you came
From the land of glacier
O you won’t say no
To outlandish callers
Lights come down
And you best friends are scurrying homeward
No, not one of them would turn around
To meet you naked eyes
Still there things piled up in my mind
Sandboy took me by the hand
Then I saw you kneeled down on the sand
You never looked so small
Facing highest tides
Then I see that you came
From the land of glacier
Though you scrape so hard
You’re plainer than lucky daughters
Lights come down
And you best friends are scurrying homeward
And you rest your head
Upon their holy shoulders
Rest your head on holy shoulders
Scrape so hard like lucky daughters
Lights come down you never cared these days
These days I find it hard to believe
These days, is a mirror deceiving me?
When I started it wasn't a game
But now I see it end, all again just the same
Now I'm fading, Angels singing me to sleep
Will you admire my smile still?
and the way that I walk
May you never fade away
Keep your faith eternity
Will you still find me?
In the corner of your eyes
These days I find it hard to believe
Now I'm fading, Voices whispering me to sleep
When I rise again and see
Grapes and vines all over me
Tonight the sun must shine
Wine of life goes down the drain
Who's there to taste it all?
Will you admire my facade?
Or my soul that I sold sometime ago
Don't mind if I fade away
Than to live forever eternity
These days I find it hard to believe
These days I just can't believe in me, like I used to anymore
about
Penny Arcade, who have been gradually getting back into action since their resurgence in 2017, release their first new music in 35 years on 7" on 18 April.
It couples two tracks, one with an indie sound from a time when the term 'neo-acoustic' did not yet exist, and the other reminiscent of the new wave of the 80s.
At that moment, all the emotions of joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure would have been mixed together and certainly existed there, but as time goes by, only the 'joy' and 'pleasure' are amplified. Scenes are created by third parties looking back in later years. What matters is, what do we want to play now? Penny Arcade awoke from their long hibernation in 2017 with this simple impulse, and their first new record in 35 years will be released on 18 April on 7" on KilikiliVilla. The new wave couples a fresh, zesty, incisive guitar sound that reveals the current state of guitar-pop's founder birds, awakened after the Corona disaster, with a dark, melody-chiselling bass line. It is significant that these two songs, which had not been recorded for a long time, were recorded by the four members of Penny Arcade in 2024. We sincerely hope that this 7" will reach listeners not as a legend of the past, but as one of the bands active in 2024.
